Description
(Citrus sinensis ‘Washington Navel’)
The Washington Navel is the oldest and one of the most popular backyard oranges in Australia. It’s also grown and loved worldwide, with many also coming out of California, USA. It’s a medium sized tree, growing anywhere from 3 – 4m tall in its lifetime. It can be pruned to size and shape so that it’s nice and easy to pick the lovely fruit it grows.
Washington navel oranges start to ripen from mid-winter and can be medium to large in size, though this can vary depending on the quantity of the fruit set. The skin is relatively easy to peel and remove. They have a nice dense flesh that’s sweet, juicy, and seedless, making it perfect for snacking.
It could be juiced in larger quantities and although the juice has a good flavour, it doesn’t keep well. If juice is your primary goal, a Valencia orange might be a better option.
